I just took 4 of my grandchildren to see “Earth” this afternoon, on Earth Day. Beautiful cinematography, stunning shots from space…and yet, I was very disappointed, and angry with the movie, overall. Yes, there is brutal violence in the survival of the fittest or those unable to survive; and yes, I am very aware that this is part of nature, and can witness it any night on TV…but I had hope to not go to a “Disney-formula” movie, where someone always dies, albeit a parent or child. The other part of the formula is the build up message of “danger, danger, danger” followed by the slow-motioned agony of the chase and the kill. I know that there are deserts that herds of elephants have to cross to get to their watering holes, and I am sure there are those that lose there way. But what about spending some time talking about the amazing method that elephants communicate with each other to avoid getting lost; and that same amazing communication that assists in remembering where the water holes are? There could have been a narrative talking about the demise of the polar bear and its habitat due to global warming, without that prolonged scene of the male polar bear (which of course is labeled the father of the two cubs) unsuccessfully killing a walrus, and starving to death. I know I should have read the revues before attending the movie, but I didn’t. Because the movie opened on Earth Day, I wrongly assumed, it would be a film that suggested to young children what they might do to make a change on our planet---pick up trash in the neighborhood, plant a tree, recycle, etc. All that while showing the beauty of our world---yes the majestic waterfalls shown, and the snowy mountain peaks. But there is beauty and entertainment in the birth of a young cub, the awkward movement of a young pup, the remarkable communication skills of dolphins. The humorous scenes of the baboons crossing the water, the birds of paradise preening, the polar bear cub stumbling on the snow brought smiles and laughter; but I had to close my eyes to the killing. If that had been humans stalking and killing their victims, the movie would have been rated PG13 or R.
