Mundane is mundane for a reason.

the problem with this movie is that it's pretentious, in it's execution, with the long shots, the repetitive actions (her eating an apple, or pudding, or a tomato). The one thing that struck me as wavering was the intention, the realization and the execution of the morality that this young woman had, I'll buy that the director didn't want to spoon feed us the details behind her intentions and desires and focus simply on the build up, the progression she experiences as she reaches this horrible moment. The problem was that in the symbolism and metaphors that were underlined in trying to show her progression, I had more questions than answers, which is usually a good thing except that those questions were skeptical in trying to validate what was in front of me. I have no problem with a director putting a cow on screen and telling me it's a bull, but if you're going to do that, you have to give credibility to your message, whether it's by the writing, or the imagery, but to asks us to take it at face value without question for the sake of art, I have a hard time buying it.
It's a great story in terms of potential, because it attempts to explore the internal struggles that plague a human being who might be decent and loving and is about to attempt a horrific act, but the exectution of this movie seemed like the director put it out there and it was our job to put the pieces together, for movies like American Beauty it works because the message is so rich and broad that it leaves room for interpretation but this film is so poor and vague that it leaves us using our imagination.. in that case I'll save the 10 dollars and make it up myself. |
