This movies is about the huge numbers of Algerian soldiers who willingly signed up in a patriotic fervor to defend a colonial "mother country" that few knew much about and one that even fewer had ever stepped foot in prior to the Allied invasion of 1944. It is soul-crushing to see these troops (much like African-Americans of the same period) exhibit such loyalty and fighting spirit only to be kicked in the teeth by an ungrateful nation, which in the end, cared nothing for neither them nor their sacrifices. And in an equally shocking display, successive post-war French governments repeatedly froze the payment of war pensions to those same Algerian veterans as "punishment" for Algeria's eventual independence. France should be ashamed of itself. |
