Just in case you need another reason to dislike the French, this film tells of the mistreatnment of Algerian troops in World War 2 who supported the French attempt to retake their country following their cowardly surrender. The film follows the lives (and deaths) of four muslin Algerians who face discrimination in many forms (denial of food, censuring of mail, refusal to provide adequate arms, etc.), from 1943 to 1945, as the resistance armies move from Italy to Germany. A post script informs us that 60 years after the War, the French are still refusing to pay the veterans who survived (and there were few of them). Apart from these political considerations, the film is very interesting from the perspective of the muslim vs christian and the French vs Algerian scenes. |
