Horror-comedy Hood of Horror was given a theatrical release last year via After Dark Film's horror festival that ran over a weekend in November. Now slated to hit DVD this March, I got a chance to check the film out . I have to say that the film isn't as good as it was seemingly promised to be. For one, the stories sucked -- the first being about a girl who's given a tattoo on her arm that somehow grants her the power to kill anyone whenever she spray-paints over their graffiti. What the hell? That's not scary; that's not even funny, so I don't where it falls into the "horror-comedy" genre. While watching the story you'll also notice that the same backdrop of an ally with graffiti on the walls is used almost through the entire story. It's almost as if they just filmed the entire thing in one day using the same set-background. Normally in a movie you can't tell whether they're using a set or not, but in this case, it's painfully clear.
Just when you think it can't get any worse, the second story appears and bores the hell out of you. It's follows an ignorant cowboy and his high-maintenance girlfriend as they visit an old folk's home of Vietnam vets, where his recently-deceased father once stayed. He's come to collect the inheritance, but in order to receive it he has to stick around the place and attempt to bond with the residents. His ignorance gets the better of him and he soon finds himself begging for his life when the vets decide that they've had enough of his bossing-around and put matters in their own hands. This is the most boring of the three stories and mostly because nothing happens in it except for the cowboy telling the vets what to do until the last 10-minutes when they get their revenge.
The last story is oddly similar to that of 1995's Tales From the Hood -- mostly revolving around a man whom makes a deal with the devil to become a rich and famous rap star. Then after his "contract" is up, he's forced to witness how he lost his friends and ruined his life. If you remember the last story in Tales, we followed a young thug who was shot and sent into some odd program that forced him to see all the deaths he caused and rethink his actions. This is yet another boring and unscary story. MadTV's Aries Spears co-stars as the long-time friend of the lead, and attempts to play a serious role. I personally think he should stick to comedy, because his "serious acting" is horrendous. All-in-all, I'm shocked that it took four people to write this mess.
There are a few scenes done in animation, which I originally thought was to bring a little flavor into the otherwise drab film, but the animation is obviously put there due to budget restraints, because there are scenes that would obviously need a lot of finance behind it, especially at the end when we're shown shots in hell itself. Regardless, the animation isn't half bad, and I think is probably the best part of the movie.
OVERALL
This is probably the most boring "hood" movie I've ever seen. Not only is it not scary, but it's not even funny. When this film hits DVD in March, do yourself a favor and skip it. |
