I got to see this film at the NY Cinema Village last night with a connsiderably young audience that packed the theatre. My impressions about the film is that it tries to be a black comedy with horrific overtones about female sexuality and the the feminum mystique and impowerment over males, but it doesn't decide if it want to go the full route aa a black comedy with horrifc overtones or a serious horror film. Even the audience that saw the film with me last night, couldn't decide if it was a comedy or a straight horror film, even though the majority of the audience liked it and laughed and reacted to the film in the right scenes. Especially the female members of the audience who got the joke and the message of this film more than the males who enjoyed the film more because of the gore scenes. But on the possible side, the lead actress Jess Weixler gave a really great performance as Dawn the girl with the "vagina dentata" and her performance carries the film and is good as Sissy Spacek's performance as Carrie. This film has definite cult possibilities but I think females will enjoy it more than males |
