Sweet story but annoying characters

Hollywood's version of reality baffles me. Most of the characters--as written--seemed very annoying to me because they act in ways that make no sense to me either logically or emotionally.
The lead character reacts so badly to the news of his wife's death, that I would conclude he has some deep emotional problems. Hollywood seems to think this is all very normal. His brother is the only one who seems real to me. I cannot help but think that this may be that the brother is the liberal who is against the way in Iraq and the lead is a conservative supporter. I suspect that this reflects what Hollywood thinks of such people.
