Admittedly I'm a fan of Neil Gaiman so maybe after having read Sandman, American Gods, Anansi Boys, Good Omens and several of his graphic novels, I have a better sense of his style than many.
However, I'm surprised at the people who made so many comparisons to other movies as a way of saying it wasn't this or that. Step back and rate the movie on it's own terms. It isn't that other movie & probably wasn't intended to be.
On with the review:
I left the theatre with the word whimsy in mind. And in a good way. It kept a kind of light feel going throughout that had me feeling everything was going to workout, but without letting me know just how.
At one point I got worried, thinking I'd been tricked because I thought it was going to end tragically. Ala Pan's Labyrinth. And that would have been a tragedy indeed because I got involved and wanted everything to work out.
And I loved the subtle comedy. The got me smiling and occasionally laughing with little details such as well timed, knowing looks.
Of course De Niro was great. His role was very unexpected from someone who may only remember Cape Fear or his other serious roles. The closest he's come before to me was 'Harry' Tuttle (The Plumber).
And Michelle Pfeiffer got to play the villain again and seemed to really enjoy delving into her dark side.
Great visuals. Unusual story that worked well for me. Magic. Humor. Adventure. Characters I could feel for.
Like I said. It hit me just right. |
