Try not to miss the point entirely

Some people really miss the point of this movie.
Some of the outraged reviewers are deriding it as an attack on America. I.e. Qtbrazillian writes "If America is such an unlivable, idiotic, stupid, ignorant nation than why don't these people like Moore and Cohen go somewhere else? You know, they'd be shot if they ever produced these kinds of movies under any other government. But we have a thing called freedom here, and these stupid people only know how to use it for the worst."
Cohen is actually English and lives there most of the time. You could make this movie in England, Scotland, Norway, Wales, Australia, Sweden, Japan, France, New Zealand, Denmark, Canada, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Poland, Latvia, Czech Republic etc etc etc etc and the governments of all these nations would care less.
The joke in Borat is aimed at myopic folk whose ignorance of the rest of the world is such, that they believe someone billed as a highly regarded reporter in Kazakhstan, could be so backward as to behave this way.
Exactly the same failing as qtbrazillian thinking America is the only free country in the world when, in fact, it is far from holding such lofty status.
As a New Yorker who has lived abroad in many countries I see first hand the resentment such attitudes cause us.
If you feel assaulted on a patriotic level by this movie, try and see the movie as an attack on the ignorance and ill founded notions of superiority held by some rather than as an attack on America. You will be far closer to getting it. |
