A mediocre exercise in telling the story of a lonely young girl in New York, Broken English plays like a modern day John Cassavetes film, no doubt because the director is Cassavetes daughter Zoe. Not only directing, she is also the writer of the film, and there is where the fault lies. Parker Posey, the lead actress is required to change personalities at least three times in the film, so the audience begins to lose any sympathy they maight have had with her character. The film is quite disjointed and in my opinion suffers for it. It could have been better, had Cassavetes had a consistent tone throughout. |
