For your Oscar consideration, Helen Mirren astonishes audiences everywhere with her superlative, dead-on performance as QEII in "The Queen"...we are also given a witty, eccentric script to match the characters, who include Prince Philip (James Cromwell, also great) and Tony Blair (Michael Sheen ought to be writing up a rough draft for his Best Supporting Oscar speech about now)...Everything about this movie is done well and done right...It marks the death of Princess Di, and presents us with the aftermath of what Queen Liz did and did not do, which was to remain silent in the advent of this worldwide shocker of a tragedy. See...Queen Liz has her standards, and she was brought up a certain way, and hey, she IS the Queen...right? So she can do whatever she wants, um, unless that includes outraging all of England with her silence. Those of you expecting a dry, brittle, crusty oh-so-English movie are in for a surprise. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, and then there are some beautiful, tender moments as well. As a whole, this is one of the best films to come out during this millenium thus far, and if Helen Mirren doesn't walk away next February clutching a Best Actress Oscar in her fist, then it will be a travesty! See this film if you appreciate excellent acting, and an excellent script to boot! |
