A Fine Tribute to the Queen

This movie is well-written and evenhanded - certainly not a bash-the-Royals movie. Oddly in the end, the staunchest defender of Queen Elizabeth turns out to be Tony Blair, who understood the personal integrity of the Queen and her commitment to the nation. Elizabeth assumed the monarchy as a girl, and she obviously knew well the difficulties Diana would encounter in accepting to mary Prince Charles at such a young age. The undertow of the film, as exemplified by the notes and flowers left at the palace, is that Diana had been screwed by the Royals in the face of Charles' unmitigated adultery; however, the balancing current in defense of the Queen surfaces when Tony Blair shocks his staff with a reality check: Diana was equally responsible for destroying her own life, especially in the end. Although the British media continually branded the Queen as cold-hearted, the other side of Elizabeth poignantly emerged throughout the film: a good person who had been hurt by Charles' infidelity, probably just as much as Diana, as evidenced by the little girl who handed over flowers to the Queen in front of the palace gates. The Queen humbly asked the little girl for permission to place the girl's flowers with the rest of the flowers for Diana. The girl said no. There was a silence. Then the little girl said, "The flowers are for you." Yes, the British people certainly mourned the death of Diana, but they desperately wanted to convey their heartfelt condolences to the Royal family, a message the tabloid press had miserably failed to communicate to the rest of the world. A+
