Say what you want to about this movie. Yes, these characters are all despicable, every single one of them; whiny, morose, and very annoying. BUT, if this film is viewed as art, as it should be, (it is an arthouse movie...if you don't like arthouse movies, then skip it, all right?) then kudos must be handed out to most of the cast, especially Nicole Kidman, and Jennifer Jason Leigh...sisters who have nothing in common, but must remain loyal to one another because no one else will have them. Kidman is outstanding in this film...one of her best roles ever. She lives in Manhattan and is attending the wedding of her sister, with whom she has been estranged for several years. We learn instantly that Kidman's character is successful as a writer, and that she is overly critical of everyone that surrounds her. Her sister is getting married to a loser (Jack Black...he's trying here, folks...really, he is...but this role would have been far superior in the hands of Phillip Seymour Hoffman)...and naturally, Kidman tried to talk Jason Leigh out of getting married...and in the meantime, criticizes everyone else, too, while her marriage is falling apart and her son, who seems very gay, is singing Blondie songs into a tape recorder. If you like quirky, talky films, then this one is for you. Otherwise, so see a movie where they blow things up. You'll be better off. |
