I recommend the movie (the lives of others) the underlining themes of repression, cowardice anxiety and alienation are not unique to the Stasi, they ruined the lives of millions.
Hundreds of people were recruited as informers to spy on innocent citizens.
The movie really hits home emotionally on how ingenious and evil the Stasi were.
The film has extra resonance given recent revelations in Poland over church leaders' ties to the secret police and in the US and elsewhere over civil liberties breaches due to tougher anti-terror laws. The film holds parallels to concerns over increased state-backed eavesdropping in the US as part of anti-terror measures. |
