Went to see this movie at a local theater that shows lots of French movies like this one. It was in French w/ subtitles that even a person fluent in the language like me needed, since there is a lot of complicated French dialogue that I couldn't always catch up with and was sometimes a bit confusing. Unfortunately, the storyline could also be describe that way as well. "Avenue Montaigne" (originally less intriguingly titled "Fauteils d'Orchestre, or "Seats in the Orchestra") is about a French girl named Valerie working as a waitress in Paris and becomes connected with art through various people. There were a lot of subplots and twists & turns, and in the end I couldn't quite get them all together to write an adequate summary of the plot. But "Avenue Montaigne" makes up for that problem with its charm. That comes from its excellent acting, particularly from the absolutely brilliant French actress Cecile de France. Also the colorful arts and good wit and humor are a treat. Most of all, it is great to go back to the beautiful city of Paris- armchair traveling in a way. If on one day you feel like exploring the wonders of French cinema, it wouldn't be a grave error to include this in your discoveries. |
