Need an easy escape from our slushy city? How about a quick trip to France? Rarely has Paris seemed more enchanting than in Danièle Thompson's optimistic ode to Gallic romance.
Linking three intertwined stories is naive waitress Jessica (Cécile de France), a small-town girl newly arrived in the big city. Her customers include a soap star (Valérie Lemercier) desperate to be hired by a famous Hollywood director (Sydney Pollack), an aging art collector (Claude Brasseur) who has alienated his resentful son (Christopher Thompson), and a famous classical pianist (Albert Dupontel) going through a midlife crisis.
De France's wide-eyed performance aside, the cast does delightful justice to Thompson's nimble script. The film uses effective acting, deft dialogue, and a sly wit to entertain, if not educate. It is so soothing and thoroughly enjoyable. |
