One of the best of the year

This is a hard film to describe. Ostensibly it is about a man who is released early ( 14 years 9 months ) from a 15 year sentence in a Czech prison after the war telling us his life story.
It is hard to describe the man. He says early on that his one ambition in life was to be a millionaire. Sometimes he seems quite sly and calculating. But most of the time he seems just kind of goofy in a Gumpy kind of way. And lucky. Though he does say his luck always brought him bad luck. The actor playing the young man has a very expressive face made to make anyone laugh.
There are some stunning images in the movie as well as lots of very beautiful Czech actresses -who all take a shine to the lucky/unlucky hero at various stages of his life. Those are clearly the UBER LUCKY times.
I thought the movie was wonderful. |
