Just saw the movie when it opened in Germany. It is the best foreign movie I have seen this year. Very funny and romantic at times, while the end is more poignant and surreal. Two scenes in the movie will be all time classics: when Jan, the hero, by default receives the medal from the emperor of Ethiopia (because he is the only one equally short as the emperor) and when Jan's German wife Lise sets out to create a new member of the German Master Race with her husband. The novel this movie is based on is equally wonderful. Hrabal was influenced by French surrealist writers and the novel, like the movie, defy easy categorization.
