What a Breath of Fresh Air!

I have not read the novel. However, I do plan on reading it, after having watched the film.
I thought the story lines and the characters were well-studied.. The actors did a marvelous job portraying the characters they were playing..
My criticism is the following:
1. I did not understand why it was (in my opinion), insinuated that the reason for one of the main character's homosexuality was because he was neglected as a child by his parents (a rich Egyptian man and his French --Paris whore, as he called her).. and this neglect resulted in him resorting to the black house-help who happened to eventually molest him.. Was that supposed to be an analysis of why he was what he was? not sure I agree with that at all..
2. Yosra (Christine the French chanteuse), it would have been great if they had her work hard on fake-playing the piano.. It almost looked ridiculous, with her hands sort of resting on the keys and just her elbows going up and down, pretending to play and sing "La Vie en Rose" by Edith Piaf.. Also, for a French native, her accent could have used some work, I think.. Considering how much potential this movie had!
3. The Coptic characters in the movie.. I did not see the significance of their faith in this community.. It almost seemed unnecessary to make a point of making them Coptic.. I do understand they were trying to portray a diverse community that was overall, corrupt.. I just wished there was more layering done on it..
Other than that, Kudos to all that were involved in this project.. I can't wait to see more of this type of sophisticated film-making.. |
