Another bon-bon from Besson

Luc Besson's have always been fantastical. Whether its the future world of The Fifth Element or the gritty urban world of Subway or Leon(The Professional) Besson has always glamourised a setting to its fullest a extent. With Angel-A, his first feature since Joan Of Arc(1999), Besson has taken one step further and, like in The Fifth Element, has created a shy, albeit stressful, character who out of the blue meets the girl of their dreams.
The whole of Angel-A is a homage to the great romantic films of the 1940's to 1960's, with its Parisian setting and the black and white cinematography. However like most of the time, Besson has turned elements around and creates characters that appeal to everyone. The two leads are superb, their performance ozzes chemistry, something that is rarely seen in movies these days.
However despite the fine performances and engaging characters, the real star of Angel-A is Besson himself. Like in The Fifth Element, Angel-A demostrates yet again the brilliance of this particular director. |
