I loved this movie. From the moment I saw the trailer, I knew that I had to see it. I wasn't disappointed.
The movie is an accurate portrayal of so many Latino families. The character depictions didn't fall into caricatures. I laughed as I saw representations of my own family members on screen.
The acting in this movie was so subtle that it seemed as if it were a documentary. The documentary feel was augmented by the graininess of some of the shots, the editing and lighting. It has a non-Hollywood feel.
What irritated me was the audience reaction to a gay theme in the movie. I saw the movie in Santa Monica, a decidedly liberal place. There were gasps and expressions of disgust when one of the male characters HUGGED another man. Are we living in 2006 or the 1950s?
Jessie Garcia plays the cousin of the main character. Not only is his performance powerful, his smoldering good looks will propel him to bigger roles. Watch for this guy!
The main actress was a perfect teenager. The combination of disgust with the status quo mixed with innocence and desire to grow up.
I want to see it again. |
