I thought Peter O'Toole gave a great performance and Jodie Whittaker was equally amazing as a newcomer in "Venus."
For me this story border-lined on kind of amoral. It lacked a kind of moral sensibility and didn't care about right and wrong. In this story Peter O'Toole is old enough to be not only her grandfather but her great grandfather and he tries to enter sexual relations with this young girl. I'm a little uncomfortable with Alex Baldwin too in last years "Minni's First Time" where he plays a step Dad who starts sexual relations with his 16 year old step daughter and the movie never even hints at child molestation.
Vanessa Redgrave spelled it all out in her performance of a dried up old women with not so much a trace of estrogen left in her body. She can barely hold the attention of her ex-husband Maurice who bides his time occasionally with her until he reaches his death.
Jodie Whittakers character "Jessie" feels totally doomed in life and as a last resort she becomes her great uncles live in nurse. She has just survived an abortion crisis and feels totally unlovable and degraded. Maurice (Peter O'Toole)her uncles best friend notices her low mood and instead of just mentoring this young vulnerable girl as in "Lost In Traslation" storyline he also tries to enter into sexual relations with her. |
