What a fine, mellow little movie this is. Gentle, easy-going, vastly entertaining on a very dry, intelligent level, so that it putters steadily along, gathering emotions and quiet surprises along the way for its two main characters: one of whom, Morris (a brilliant, astounding performance from the Legendary Peter O'Toole) and a young girl, the grand-neice of Morris' best friend and acting buddy, who, like Eliza Doolittle in "My Fair Lady" lacks social graces.
Morris becomes enchanted and enthralled with this trollop and yes, some creepy encounters between them ensue. If you can get past O'Toole nuzzling on this young girl's neck like a teenage boy in heat, then you will understand what is actually at the heart and soul of this very touching picture. It is about mortality. When one realizes that they are at the end of their life, they sometimes are likely to discover the most unexpected urges and whims inside of them. After all, what do they have to lose? I absolutely loved this movie, and I am crossing my fingers that on Oscar night the Academy remembers Mr. O'Toole (in this, his EIGHTH NOMINATION) and rewards him for this truly exceptional effort. Some will say, if he DOES win, that it will be for his body of work, but if you do yourself a favor and see this film, you will know otherwise. His performance stands alone as a winner. And here's to many more from a bonafide Screen Legend! Cheers! |
