This is a movie that despite its ambition, really had no point in being made. Chapter 27 is a character study of John Lennon's killer, Mark David Chapman. The title comes from J.D. Salinger's classic tale of social ineptitude, The Catcher In The Rye, which leaves off at Chapter 26.

Upon seeing the first review of this film, I was curious as well as fascinated and looking forward to seeing it. Despite a good performance by Leto, if not spectacular, and a 60+ pound weight gain to boot, there was nothing extraordinary or gripping about this movie and the murder of an icon. I'm not sure if perhaps the filmmakers wanted the audience to pity or feel sorry for Chapman or if they just wanted to make a buck, but by the end of the film, I was left wondering if this film was worth making. The look inside the mind of Chapman did not put enough emphasis or power into a man gone insane with rage, and they barely scratched the surface as to exactly why this happened. This just seemed like yet another movie glorifying someone who did something that is and will be reviled for generations past, present, and future.

Let's performance itself was good, but certainly not as great as his performance in Requim For A Dream or My So-Called Life, for that matter. The direction was suspect, and the cinemetography was not used to its full potential. The screenplay and writing were seriously lacking and seemed pretentious to the point of making symbolic references to all of Chapman's obssessions, i.e. Lennon, The Wizard of Oz, and The Catcher In The Rye.

Skip this one. It won't matter to you if you see it or not.
