The Performances (especially Jared Leto) Save It!

The film opened here last weekend in one theater (Reading Cinemas Gaslamp - San Diego, CA), and had about 5 show times on it's opening day. My boyfriend & I caught the 5:50pm show time on the day it opened (Friday, May 9th), and we ended up being the only ones in the theater.
While it was sad to acknowledge a film being absolutely forgotten, I know PR is what did it in. There weren't reviews of it in the local newspapers or weekly publications, nor where there any television/radio ads (I did, however, see a tiny print ad in the newspaper show times section). If no one knows a film is coming out, or even the fact that it exists, then why would anyone pay and go see it? As for the film itself, I thought it was pretty all right. Not the best biopic, nor did it contain any adrenaline-inducing scenes to make it exciting at all. However, Jared Leto turns in an impressive performance and transformation, and it was nice to see Lindsay Lohan having a nice performance (similar to her supporting role in 2006's "Bobby"). As for recommending it, I'd say there's a 50/50 chance. While I love supporting independent films and all, I'm not sure people would be satisfied paying $8-10 for a film like this (I was able to get discounted $6 prepaid movie vouchers at my school, which the box office accepted for this film - although there should've been a New Release/Exclusive Engagement restriction).
In the end, the performances are what saves the film (which barely runs for about 1 hour and 20 mins). Catch it if it reaches a theater near you if you want to support one (or two) of the actors, or even indie film making in general. If not, then DVD is the way to go. |
