Eagle versus Shark is another comedy in the vein of "Napoleon Dynamite" or "Welcome to the Dollhouse". However, it lacks that little something that made both of those movies entertaining.
Once again, we meet two uber losers. Lily is a human doormat who has a crush on Jarrod, a character that strives to be doing his best Napoleon Dynamite through the entire movie. Jarrod however, is more like a combination of Napoleon Dynamite and his brother, as Jarrod quickly reveals he's on a quest to beat up his high school bully. Lily and Jarrod awkwardly hook up before this quest, but Jarrod and his "complicated life" make him dump her when they arrive at Jarrod's hometown. Then the movie just spins on it head for the rest of the time.
At various points you think it's about Jarrod trying to make his family love him again, or maybe it's about Lily finding her backbone and standing up to the jerk that is Jarrod. No, when it's all said and done, this movie is really about nothing. I think an argument could be made that it's about true love, but physical attraction and pity really do not make up true love, and that's all these characters share with each other.
Verdict: This movie was actually a hit with the indie crowd, and if you enjoy that type of movie you might like this, but this lacks the comedy of "Napoleon Dynamite" and the poignancy of "Welcome to the Dollhouse" which means endgame in my opinion, it presents nothing except a waste of 2 hours. |
