The movie begins and ends with Rosario Dawson. Her performance is clearly oscar material; she has a talent for evoking myriad emotions in the span of a single scene, a single shot. The role demands an almost unbearable intensity, and she succeeds wildly. I suppose no critics commented on this movie because of its NC-17 rating; let me tell you, every sexual act, every act of violence, is integral to this great human tragedy. Nothing is gratuitous--not one moment of the movie is anything but authentic. This is Shakesperian drama dialed up for the 21st century. |
