If this movie were made by Americans, it probably would suck @$$ into more B-movie material.
Why? Because the two Americans that had speaking parts in this movie could have made the BEST of their limited scenes but instead gave the worst performances. But what makes this movie better is how you don't even distinguish the Korean culture. Because of the storyline, in other words, I really felt like I had been living in Korea for a while. So some of the scenes I felt like I could relate to like being accused of stealing the best part of the squid, the tentacle (which ends up being the primary tool of the monster by the way.)
As for monster movies, they come and go. But what makes them memorable are well-written storylines and scripts. What adds to it are a nice blend of freaky moments, humor, social/environmental overtones, and a memorable looking creature. I mean the CGI was pretty decent to the parts where the monster is diving into the waters looks pretty real.
But what always gets me are close ups of "what are these people staring at?" and then all of a sudden you see this creature plowing-through/eating people alongside a concrete-lined canal. Totally unexpected and original.
Rent this DVD, watch it in English first then in Korean with English subtitles. You'll find in either setting, this movies still doesn't lose anything because the key element from this show is that you are supposed to be scared first.
