Near the end of the movie, when Wilberforce finally succeeds in his mission, the entire hall of Parliament erupts in racous excitement and clapping. The theatre my daughter and I were in lay in rapt quietude, most of us, I suspect, just enjoying the moment and maybe a bit teary. However, my daughter was so thrilled with the outcome, that she began clapping too. What better lesson in racism could I provide, than a story she felt a part of to the point that she could not contain herself when Good at last won out?! When the credits began to roll, Ayla looked at me and said, "mommy, that was the greatest movie -- now no bad people will be able to capture other people ever again and take them away from their families -- because people are NOT for buying and selling!" (I wish this was true, as we know young children are still bought and sold as prostitutes in many areas of our world -- but that discussion is for another day) Is 3 too young to talk about slavery and racism? I don't think so -- especially from her summary of the movie -- she GOT it -- much more than I ever could have done, just from talking.
Sadly, she was the only child in the theatre. Funny how many parents buy young children disgusting, violent video games, or allow senseless cartoons to be viewed -- but, a movie of substance? Well, perhaps they are too young?! It is never too early (or too late!) to learn about good and evil, and about how it only takes one person to change the world.
