My faint memories from the life of Wilberforce come mostly from a few paragraphs in my middle school history book. It is odd that a man of his historical importance is oft overlooked by history.
This is precisely why this movie is important. It shows that Wilberforce was perhaps the most important voice in history for the abolition movement. Before any were willing to stand up to this awful act, Wilberforce, for most of his youth, challenges the parliament to understand that all humans are created equal.
I only wish that the story of John Newton could have been better explained.
In the end, this is an inspiring movie that should be seen by all who insist religious morals have no place in politics. With slavery, religious values were used by MLK and Wilberforce to prove that the work of God is not distinct from the works of the people. |
