Hitchcock Meets Miss Marple

Maggie Smith, complete with lavender coat, fuzzy hat and frumpy doo, is one hell of an avenging angel in this smart, funny film. Despite the mayhem, one is rooting for her and the family she comes to serve in the veddy British town of Little Wallop.

Patrick Swayze was gross (a sort of male Jocelyn Wildenstein) and it was a bit hard to believe that anyone except the most desperate of women would be drawn to him. But then, poor Gloria (Kristin Scott Thomas) was pretty desperate. Conversely, Rowan Atkinson as Gloria's husband was remarkably appealing (I mean this is Mr. Bean) in his tailored, austere way.

Niall Johnson, the director, and the writers certainly tip their hats to Hitchcock both in the story and visually--what else is, among other things, the leg of lamb being dressed with mint in the kitchen about?

If you're looking for a bit of elegant fun, this is it.
