True to life, but tough to enjoy

As a war vet myself, I can tell you this movie comes much closer to portraying the reality of returning from war than any other movie I have ever seen. I can recall many if not most of the exact same feelings experienced by the characters in this movie, and the story and director does a good job of making the viewers feel those same feelings themselves.
Unfortunately, being true to life can also be a real downer, and not necessarily the most enjoyable thing to watch. There are triumphs, yes, as the main character learns to deal with her disability and the other characters assimilate back into society, but the movie is overwhelmingly depressing.
If you want to know what it is like to serve in an unpopular war and return home, or if you are the type that likes similar realistic but often depressing shows like "Hill Street Blues", then this is the movie for you. But if you want a lot of action or suspense, you will come away very disappointed. |
