Bad Writing, directing, casting
by Jeff W (movies profile)
Sep 20, 2008
This is the worst casting I've ever seen in a movie, virtually every actor is wrong for their role. Travolta and Gandolfini plod through this like two fat over the hill meatballs in it for a paycheck. Laura Dern is dull as stale bread. Salma Hayek and Jared Leto are like overcooked spagehetti. There is no chemistry between them, Hayek still with post partum baby blubber, is stiff as a psychotic femme-fatale. Jared Leto, with head shaven bald looks liked the drugged-out femme boy he is with little presence to pull off the role of a lady-killing con. Every single one of these actors is wrong for the part they are playing.
Next, the screenplay is pepperred with some corny half-breeding of post-modern foul mouth cop lingo interspersed with some attempt at film noir snappy dialogue. It's horrible. Hayek mouth's the overdone cliches common to psycho fatales in these types of movies. The murder scenes are contrived and cliched. It's just bad writing.
The direction is run of the mill TV-movie of the week stuff.
It's really a sad case, because this real life crime drama is an amazing tale that, if told with a good script and the right casting would have been a dynamite story in the mode of In Cold Blood.
Pass on this one. |
