A gift of a real Snow Angel

This movie is a sad tragic look at the relationship between Annie (Kate Beckinsale) and Glenn (Sam Rockwell). This relationship is the heart of the movie, we watch as Glenn literally disintegrate before our eyes. Annie is breathtaking, we bear witness to her life in free fall, as everything and everyone she loves seems just out of reach. Annie works in a Chinese restaurant with her best friend Barb (Amy Sedaris) and is sleeping with Barbs Husband Nate (Nicky Katt). Also working at the restaurant is Arthur Parkinson (Michael Angarano) whom Annie used to babysit when he was younger, and the way they sit and casually talk about the boy's relationships, and that she used to bath him when he was younger, is almost creepy. Arthur's parents Don (Griffin Dunne) and Louise (Jeanetta Arnette) are in the midst of family problems themselves. At the beginning of the movie, Don is sent packing from the family home. Arthur is also finding love for the first time himself, Lila Raybern (Olivia Thirlby) is new to the high school and catches Arthur's eye rather quickly. Annie's life revolves around her daughter Tara (Gracie Hudson) whom Glenn says he is willing to watch for Annie, but after Glenn drove his car over a bridge Annie just can't trust him, Glenn quotes scripture and is seen praying many times in the movie. The plot of the movie involves a tragic accident that is almost a shot in the gut. This plot point causes Glenn to go over the edge figuratively, he drinks more and fights with Nate, who is now living with Annie, he also does the unthinkable. This movie starts out with at a high school band practice and is soon flashing back to the focal point of the movie, it picks up where it started and shows the consequences of one persons misguided actions. This is a truly wonderful film, Kate Beckinsale turns in one of her best performances in a long while. I give Snow Angels a 4 and on my avoidance scale a strong 0, this movie is in very limited run, so go find it and see it before its too late. |
