I hardly ever walk out of a movie, but I would have in this case had my wife had the same reaction I did. This is one of the more brutal movies I've seen, though not graphically violent in the heads-rolling-down-the-pyramid Apocalypto fashion.
If you wish to avoid learning any plot details, stop here. This movie is about the estrangement of a young couple, the accidental death of their daughter, the murder of the wife by the husband, followed by his suicide.
There are times when it is important not to avert one's eyes from tragic and awful things. Sometimes you have a role to play in the situation. In my early training as a pathologist, I was involved in forensic pathology, and had to become involved in many cases with stories as depressing as the one portrayed here. Sometimes there is something you need to learn, appreciate, and understand better, and the awfulness you have to observe is integral to the whole thing, and can't be helped.
In this case, though, the awfulness is gratuitous. I think this film is mainly about voyeurism, and I found it repulsive.
The acting is superb, but in the service of...what? If you are going to need post-traumatic stress disorder counseling, there should at least be something gained. |
