I've never been a big fan of movies with subtitles, but the buzz on this film made me curious. And boy, was I glad it did!
Early on I thought I had figured out the major plot line of the movie, but it was so filled with interesting sub-plots that I soon just decided to stop trying to predict and let everything sort itself out during the film.
Although I didn't really recognize anyone in the cast, the ensemble did a marvelous acting job. The period dress, costuming and direction all merit serious consideration when awards nominations are decided.
Even though the movie is about 2 1/2 hours long, rather than get bored you feel as though you are reading a great novel and even if you start to get tired you want to keep turning the pages to see what happens next. Several of the scenes are graphic both with violence and nudity, but were never gratuitous. When you leave the theater you get the feeling that were it not for a society of law and order, people are capable of doing the most barbaric things to one another.
If the subject matter interests you at all, then I would highly recommend this movie. You won't be disappointed. |
