It completely changed my opinion of Beethoven

Some years ago I saw a movie called Immortal Beloved, starring Gary Oldman and Isabella Rosellini which, overall, portrayed Beethoven as cruel, boorish and vindictive man, making one wonder how on earth such a person ever composed such music.
I never liked Beethoven, but was always curious about him because of his deafness.
Now,because of this movie,(and, mainly, the fact that he is the favorite composer of someone I care about),I find myself liking him,in some respects, better than Mozart (although I think Mozart is brilliant, and composed some pieces which are close to my heart).
I think he was a difficult person, who would be even more difficult to portray on screen, which makes Ed Harris's playing of the part all the more impressive. Also the script was really good showing him not as a mean and vengeful man,but rather as warm and soft-hearted in his own stubborn, sometimes self-centered,way.
Diane Kruger is also very good in her role. She has poise and class (which is something we need more of these days),and is believable as an exceptionally talented copyist who is not too much of a feminist nor arrogant. And I really like their relationship.
That it acknowledges God in the movie (especially at the end) is wonderful.
I love the scene of the Ninth Symphony.
In fact,I love the Ninth Symphony.
This movie,(and the person I care about),have made it my favorite piece of classical music. |
