I'm not sure why so many women-critics found anti-feminism in this movie. This definitely wasn't Agnieszka Holland's intention (in her own words). But some people could even find Mount Rushmore racist, I guess.
Anyhow, the music in this movie, especially the arrangement of the 9th symphony is quite moving, soul shaking when combined with wonderful camera shots. If the score will not be nominated for an Oscar, it will mean that the awards are politically inspired after all. However, at the same time everyone expects that this was the final scene and we'll get a happy ending. But the movie stays true to Beethoven last days, just like "Amadeus" did with Mozart's life. Beethoven was ahead of his time, like most geniuses were and are, so are priviliged to witness his fall, when his compositions were not as enthusiastically welcomed as the 9th was.
Ed Harris portrait of Maestro was quite convincing and I especially enjoyed the small pearls of wisdom about life, passion and creativity. |
