First off, let me say this to idiots who are saying "I thought this was a nice fairy tale, I was so disturbed by the violence!!"

Let me ask you something, are children's movies USUALLY rated R? Thanks.

Moving on...

This movie has an amazing [yet depressing] story with just enough parts missing to leave the interpretation to you. Beautiful graphics, amazing acting, and a very unique story make this one amazing.

In addition, the relationships and love are so heartfelt and real. Mercedes is a wonderful character. And justice IS served eventually.

Everything I expected to happen never did. Some scenes were quite sad and gory, but it was necessary to establish characters for who they were. This also has historic relevance to the Franco period of dictatorship in Spain, so maybe the violence and sadness was used to awaken us ignorant Americans? Either way it established the Captain's evil personality.

Just give this one a try.. it's beautiful :)
