I've read all of your reviews, now here's mine. Loved the movie!! Being a native New Yorker, I remember being at the St. George Hotel back in the day, and here comes Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe - they begin to sing/play Che Che Cole - remember? Fast forward to the movie - the song Mi Gente (My People) says it all. I applaud JLo for bringing this story to the masses. The Fania label in its hey day could not be touched - the greatest bands, singers - Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, Ray Barretto, Joe Cuba, Richie Rey - am I taking you all back to the day when music was real music. The movie takes you back to the time when Salsa was alive, the lyrics spoke to you. So many stories have been written about Hector Lavoe and how tragically he died. Young latinos today will never experience seeing Hector live in concert and how his talent touched you! When Ruben Blades wrote the song "El Cantante" he managed to capture the true essence of who Hector Lavoe was - fame, celebrity, downfalls, but most of all, Hector's passion for his music, his people and his enchanted island of Puerto Rico. Go see the movie - sit back and enjoy the music and go back to when music was music you will not be disappointed. Hector - Vives en Nuestros Corazones Por Siempre!!! |
