I have a four year old and we have every single animated movie release from 2003 onward (and many prior) in our DVD collection. Some are fun to watch and some are good enough to watch on my own when the boy is asleep. My son insisted to go to this movie and even though he is young I figured it might be worth a try. We both were bored and we left about an hour in. The reason we could do that is there is no reason to actually care about the characters or the ridiculous premise of conflict - a guy who does not like his job prospects. The characters are not lovable either.
Some examples to give you an idea of my perspective. Nemo had heart and humor, Shrek is lovable and he had great buddy comedy with Donkey, The Incredibles had conflict with a real villain and family ties, and Toy Story had conflict, suspense, and good physical comedy with classic toys. These are great animated films so maybe it is not fair to compare. So let us consider James from James and the Giant Peach has real tragedy and you really care for him, Madagascar at Chris Rock out front and some great individually funny characters, Monsters Inc had a lovable girl, and kids love monsters, Monster House had a great visuals, Happy Feet had great music and a real underdog. Even Over the Hedge moved along nicely. These are not great films but they are watchable.
But this Bee Movie is not as good as any of these movies. Who cares about Bees? Who cares about a whiner who doesn’t like his job prospects? Whose life do we save? Who was really hysterical ? Which character do we love? What is the tragedy? And most importantly who in this film connects to both a kid and an adult???? Great animated films give us entertainment for kids and adults. This fails on both counts. |
