This is a very bad movie, even for bad movies this is a bad movie. I'm not sure why anyone thought Burt Reynolds would make a good king but he's not. It might have worked as a spoof but this wasn't so it doesn't. Leelee Sobieski seems to grow homelier as she ages and her acting skills deteriorate in kind. She speaks with an American accent while her father, played by John Rhys Davies, speaks in a cultured British accent. Rhys Davies is the only one in this movie who seems to have transcended the clumsy direction. Ray Liotta plays his evil magus roll with over the top bravado but this isn't "Good Fellas" and he's a thug out of water in this oddly cast sword and sorcery snoozer.
The battle scenes have some decent flair and almost seem stolen from a better movie. This entire movie seems like it was stolen from a better film, " Be Kind Rewind" has nothing on this dreadful waste of celluloid. I sat through the two plus hours of this horrible film deciding if the sub zero temps outside were really worse than this movie. I decided against freezing and watched in morbid fascination as accents disappeared and a bad film grew progressively worse. Before the climactic battle scene scene there is the obligatory rousing horseback "Braveheart" moment where one actor who had been at least attempting a British accent reverts to his urban roots and shouts, " In da name of da king...IN DA NAME OF TROOF!!" But it isn't funny, it's just bad acing in a bad movie.
To be fair this movie had a talented cast and most had worthy pedigrees from far better films but this movie, for the most part, made all of them seem amateurish and talentless and for that you can thank the ham fisted direction, ultra bad script and the obviously inept casting department. I can't think of any thing to say to recommend this movie but it does have a better ending than " No Country for Old Men."
