Before seeing this movie, I half dreaded( expected) the long drawn out gory torture scenes, heavily rendered heroism or at worst a movie wrought with political viewpoint about war. But, lucky for me, this movie wasn't any of those things. Little of the extra butter fat but, only 1% left to make the movie throughly enjoyable.
The center focus was on the humanity of the war, the very individual's undying hope and indominable courage of escaping from the POW camp. And perhaps because of it, I was able to view ( think ) about POW, war, and soldiers of the war with intimate focus. The price that war exacts from that very individual. I left the theater wondering if Deiter suffered from PTSD afterwards. I am glad this movie took me there thinking about this POW as my neighbor.
I particularly liked the assembly of actors, Bale, Zahn and Davies. Their acting was of 1st quality & I don't see any of these actors on entertaintment type news 24/7. I don't know who they wear, what they eat.., therefore, I liked the ample space they leave for me( the viewer) to project the charcter that thy're playing. |
