It's not great, but it's not bad either.

I was pretty much forced into seeing this movie by my 4-year old sister and my 9-year-old brother. I was dreading it, expecting a terrible pile of trash.
However, maybe it's these low expectations that made me enjoy the movie a bit more. Sure, many parts are very corny and pretty much every attempt at a joke falls flat, but when it comes to sheer entertainment, Arthur delivers. It is by no measure whatsoever Pixar material, but when comparing it to recent debacles such as Hoodwinked, The Wild and especially Doogal (I cringed all the way through that one.) this film is actually not that bad.
It has a great cast including Robert DeNiro (!) and Madonna (?) and Freddie Highmore can hold his own without the help of two-time costar Johnny Depp.
Arthur had the potential to be a great film. Had the studio pushed the film a bit more, it could have been a film that the whole family could look forward too. And it is. You just wouldn't know from the marketing. Arthur might not have what it takes to be in the big leagues of animation, but for an off-season release, it's more than just a humdrum, run of the mill CG animated film that we've seen a thousand times before. And it might not be perfect, but it's on the right track. |
