DON'T MISS THE POINT OF IT....

How can a movie have low individual grades, but rate so high overall? Go see the movie, but with the right understanding up front. This picture confronts an important issue and brings to light another.
Most critics of this movie completely miss the point of it because they are not young, black, fatherless men from urban society. Because they cannot associate with the main character (or ANY of the characters, really), they miss the entire point.
This movie confronts the extreme difficulties of young, black, fatherless men from poor urban areas (who number in the millions), to become a part of the 'American Dream.' This segment of our population is too often pigeon-holed and then cast aside. It is not hard to understand why so many of them (us) fall into negative lives. 'Stomp The Yard' gives all a perspective on that particular difficulty from both male & female points-of-view.
It also highlights an important vehicle for these lost young men to find their true selves and become benefits to their families and communities. Higher education and fraternity/sorority affiliation have not only enriched and improved the lives of MILLIONS of African-Americans since slavery, but also improved the very fabric of this country.
So don't miss the point. This roughly-done, but fairly well-told story is about the bonds of POSITIVE BROTHERHOOD and the dreams it can help fulfill. It is about using a positive foundation to claim a brother who has known only unhealthy, negative bonds. "Steppin" is just the tool to tell the story, NOT the story in itself. Don't miss the point. |
