Fun But Not Brilliant

"Music and Lyrics" is a standard mainstream romantic comedy. It doesn't want it's audience to think too much, it prefers you just sit back and enjoy the show.
As modern romantic comedies go, "Music and Lyrics" is enjoyable. There is no brilliant psychological angst or inner pain going on, but the film never strives for that. It's a light-hearted date move.
Hugh Grant is charming as Alex Flethcer, a former member of an 80's pop band, oddly enough named "Pop." He spends his time performing at state fairs and theme parks living off his past. An opportunity to get back on the charts comes when the current pop diva wants a song written and Alex has less than a week to deliver.
Alex struggles as he only writes music, not lyrics. He lucks out when he hears the woman watering his plants, Sophie (Drew Barrymore), starts making up words as she waters. The two write a song and rpesent to the diva.
The rest of the story is predictable, but fun. I especially enjoyed the 1980's style music video that Alex's band had made. The song and the video were perfect representations of 1980's pop music. They show the video again as the credits rolled and I stayed to watch.
Don't look for this film at next year's Oscars, but if you're looking for a date film that is not going to make you wretch,"Music and Lyrics" will work for you. You'll probably laugh a little even if you don't walk away thinking you just saw a masterpiece. |
