'The King' obviously tried to aspire to a Greek tragedy without having any sense of what a tragedy is. The story lacks any explanation to why the Gael's character is as evil as he was in the movie i.e. incest, fratricide, murder, and his final declaration that he "wants to git with God." WTF? Was that supposed to be some critique of Christian evangelists? All this movie was about was seeing a psychopath destroy a family without any sense of why he was doing what he was doing. Was it because he was a bastard/illegitimate? The viewer has no sense of his motivation other than he want to nail the daughter/his half sister knowing very well what his relationship is to her. FYI, a Greek tragedy would have had him do that but unknowingly thus the term 'tragedy'.

I can't believe they got William Hurt and Gael Garcia-Bernal to do this movie because it really didn't make any sense. There's just no background to the characters so you don't get a feel for who they are vis-a-vis Gael's character. Just a lot of bad cliches in terms of Baptists and their beliefs. Although I'm not a Baptist you have to wonder if all this film was about was the screenwriters/directors immature rant against his Baptist upbringing. It's just a bad movie folks so go see something else.
