First of all, are you really going to listen the the New York Times? They gave a D. If you look you'll also see that Hollywood Reporter gave the same "grade". We know what kind of freaky liberals live in those places. And do we really want to trust what the Rolling Stone says? I think we adults are much smarter than that. Now onto the review.
If you've read other reviews you'll know the main backdrop of the story, so I won't repeat that. However, this story goes beyond a town and football. This story is about human life and how we can overcome the worst of times to triumph into glory. This is definitely where NY Times, Hollywood Reporter, and Rolling Stone get it all wrong. It keeps being compared to "Friday Night Lights". It's not even supposed to be about the game. For Huntington, WV, it was about getting up off the ground, remembering those that were lost, and actually getting on the field again and moving past, as much as you can, the hurt of losing the entire team and citizens in a plane crash. (Which happened to be less than a mile from the airport.)
The director, McG, did a fantastic job and the writing by a young 25 yr. old man was superb. The acting was by well knowns as well as a few up and coming young stars. They all did outstanding at telling this story. The visuals, from the beautiful West Virginia hills and mountains, to the campus of Marshall University, to the game shots; everything was perfectly shot. This was an A+ movie all around.
Don't pay attention to what critics say. Go see this instead of any other movie this Christmas season. This will stir your soul in ways that you cannot fully understand. This is THE MOVIE to see!
