McG's "We Are Marshall" carries a great message of perseverance and courage throughout the movie and into the hearts of those watching. The true story itself is nothing less of awe-inspiring, and the movie conveys the story well.
There are many times the movie evokes great emotion of sadness, grief, and most importantly, triumph. I did not feel it was a "football" type movie, though there was enough action in the movie to appeal to football lovers. The most memorable parts of the movies are those off the field.
The 1970's era was captured near-perfectly by the "pay attention to details" attitude of the creators. The bellbottoms, plaid jackets, and lambchops only helped to add to this re-visit to the 70's, while the overall effect of lighting and 70's type film and lens capture captivate the period.
The movie was, at times, a bit "overdone" and excessively sappy, as indicated by the slow motion football pass that shows "flashbacks" from pivotol points in the movie. However, this really does not take anything from the movie. Don't let that part of it stop you from being inspired by this movie and story.
McConaughey took on the role Jack Lengyl, the head coach, nicely. You could tell that he was a great fit for the role and enjoyed the work. McConaughey was sometimes a little cheesy and cliche, but once again, I don't think this negated the level of the movie.
Fox was impressive in his role as Red Dawson. I was very suprised to see him do so well in his first big-screen role.
The entire cast did a great job in this movie, with special mentions to Kate Mara and Anthony Mackie.
McG made a good transition from his other movies to this more dramatic film. He definitely scored the touchdown with this movie.
Overall, I have to say that the story is great, the movie is good. The combination of the two make for a must-see movie over the holiday season. A great family and sports movie, but has themes that reach a far greater audience. Great timing with the football bowl games... |
