I have been up and down with these types of movies. I thought the Scary Movie movies were funny, but was jaded with Date Movie, Epic Movie, etc. I heard mixed reviews on this board, and sinc emy wife and I are expecting our first child within a month, decided to go out before the fury of parenthood. Here is what I found:
First, do not take your kids if they are under 13. There is adult humor (both visually and verbally) throughout the movie, so if you don't want your 9 yr old daughter asking challenging questions, then watch the Dr Seuss movie instead. However, on the other side, don't expect it to rank as a top comedy either. There are really funny parts, and some dead parts, but overall, if you want to go out and just have a good time, it is well worth it. Although they stick to the Spiderman spoof a lot (to carry along the plot, which I thought was lacking in Date, Epic, and Spartans), they do a nice job of touching on older and newer super hero genres. I also enjoyed the collection of Airplane type jokes sprinkled throughout the movie. Most of the jokes and gags are low brow, but they still delivered laughs. It is not just a collection of spoofs strewn together; there is a loose storyline that logically puts the joke in its respective position. Some of the humor will make you roll yoru eyes, others will make you grin, and quite a few will have you laughing outloud. The special effects are good (not great, but it's not supposed to be with this type of movie anyway), the acting is about what you'd see in Scary Movie, and the directing is actually ok.
Again folks, if you want a comedy like Something About Mary, or Meet The Parents, this is not it. This is the type of movie you go watch so you don't need to think for 2 hours. I LOVE critically acclaimed, complex movies as well, but sometimes you just want to go out and spend an hour and a half just relaxing and laughing. This movie will do it. Don't go with expectations, just go with an open mind. Real open :-) Overall, a strong B.... |
